Automatic Breaks in Ontraccr

⏸️ Automatic Breaks in Ontraccr

Ontraccr allows administrators to configure automatic break rules to standardize time tracking and support labor compliance. These rules deduct break time from shifts based on company-defined settings — with the option to exclude specific roles from being affected. This article explains how automatic breaks work and how exclusions are configured at the role level.

🧭 What Are Automatic Breaks?

Automatic breaks in Ontraccr are global time tracking rules that deduct break time from user shifts automatically.

For example:

  • Deduct 30 minutes from any shift longer than a defined threshold
  • Remove the need for workers to manually clock out for lunch

📌 Automatic break settings are configured globally, but can be applied selectively by role.

🛠️ Where to Configure Break Rules

Break settings are configured globally in:

Settings > Time Tracking > Automatic Breaks

From here, admins can define:

  • Break duration (e.g., 30 minutes)
  • Thresholds (e.g., apply after 5 hours of continuous work)

🔧 How to Exclude Roles from Automatic Breaks

You can exclude specific roles from automatic break deductions using the Roles & Permissions system.

To do this:

  1. Go to Settings > Roles and Permissions
  2. Select the relevant role (e.g., Supervisor)
  3. Look for the Automatic Breaks setting
  4. Uncheck it if you want to exclude that role from automatic deductions

🧠 This allows your organization to apply breaks for workers in the field while exempting supervisors or office roles as needed.

🧠 Use Case Example

You’ve enabled automatic breaks for your company, but:

  • You want field workers to have standard breaks deducted
  • You want supervisors to be exempt (e.g., for flexible schedules)

You simply disable automatic breaks in the Supervisor role configuration — and those users will no longer have breaks automatically applied.

📌 Summary

Ontraccr’s automatic break system ensures consistent time tracking while giving you flexibility to apply or exclude break deductions by role. There are no per-task exclusions or additional permissions required — control is handled entirely through Roles and Permissions.
