Creating a Board from Scratch in Ontraccr

🛠️ Creating a Board from Scratch in Ontraccr

Overview

Boards in Ontraccr are customizable spaces to manage any kind of workflow — from project tracking to HR to procurement. If you want full control over the layout, statuses, and card design, you can create a board from scratch instead of using a template.

🎯 When to Use This

Use this method when:

  • You need a custom workflow that doesn’t match a default template
  • You want to define your own statuses (columns) and card design
  • You need the board to be tied to a specific division in your company

🧩 How to Create a Board from Scratch

  1. Click the ➕ Plus Icon next to the board title
This opens the board creation panel.
  2. Fill in the required fields:
    • Board Title: Enter a name for your board (e.g., “Site Equipment Tracker”).
    • Division: Select one or more divisions this board will belong to.
      • Note: If your company doesn't use divisions, it will default to the main division.
    • Card Type: Select a card design (e.g., “Job Candidate,” “Project Tracker,” “Project Bid”).
      • This determines the fields/questions inside each card.
      • If no card design exists, or you’d like to create a new one for a board please refer to this article
  3. Define Statuses (Columns) (Optional)
    • Type a status name and hit Enter.
    • Add as many as you need (e.g., "New", "In Progress", "Complete").
    • These statuses will appear as columns in the board layout.
  4. Click “Submit.”
Your board will be created and accessible from the board list.

Example Use Case

Let’s say you're building a custom HR Onboarding Tracker:

  • Title: "HR Onboarding"
  • Division: "Human Resources"
  • Card Type: "Job Candidate"
  • Statuses: “Orientation Scheduled,” “Training in Progress,” “Certifications Complete,” “Ready for Deployment”

This gives you a board tailored to your onboarding flow with relevant fields and stages.

🧠 Tips & Edge Cases

  • You can always edit statuses or board settings later if you change your mind.
  • The card design you pick is locked in for that board — choose one that suits your workflow.
  • If you're not sure which card type to use, check with your Ontraccr admin or review existing templates for inspiration.
